I once had the pleasure of meeting Carl Sagan at Cornell and have always believed this is our imperative. Also have worked for a long time on systems to gather a lot of people to solve problems over the net and this is fantastic. Probably sending a signal now would only be useful to send a more positive message to any scared ET's hanging near Sol. More likely everybody else is talking through a faster medium and we need to get online NOW! Suppose ET has had more time to keep blowing itself up with bombs etc than we do. As it is, hope we find a very positive and informative signal soon before desperate nations develop to the point that we all make this world uninhabitable. Finding ET cannot be bad for humanity. I also have powerful computer that doesn't do much most of the time so I decided to give it a job to do in it's spare time and this was best I could find.

Finding ET is fun, plus i'm an astronomy student and computer hobbyist, how could i not participate?

Finding ET may not be for the overall GOOD of humanity, but it will allow humanity to finally prove that we are not alone. It stands to reason that life out there will invariably be like life here, some good, some bad. The benefits of this outweigh the bad stuff. Thats why I elected to participate.

How could I not? After downloading the program, there was the chance that *I* might find the signal. After that I just couldn't turn the computer off. Which lead to an odd exchange with my girlfriend: Me; I've just downloaded this cool screensaver, it looks for aliens! Her; That's nice honey. (some hours later) Her; Honey, you've left the computer on. Me; Yeah, it's looking for aliens. Her; You have to leave the computer on, because aliens might be trying to contact us? Me (straight faced); Yes, that's right.... I'm sure she thought she'd just moved in with a person with problems beyond the dreams of analysts.

At least hopefully it will wake people up to the fact that it's pretty naive to think we are the only lifeforms in this vast universe!

The government should not be footing the bill , for it is more likely than not that this search is futile. If the government paid for SETI, it would take away from funding for valid space advancement as well as other gains in astro/exobiology. However, without trying we would never know. This is why SETI@home is such a great idea. It "wastes" little money, and the advantages to being successful far outweigh the time and effort used by interested private people.

I have seen UFO's on several occasions over the last 40 years, I believe the Gov. knows what and who they are. But WE THE PEOPLE deserve to KNOW who they are and where they are from! WE THE PEOPLE of Planet Earth need to know [deserve to know!!] who our neighbors are, then learn to live with, as well as, learn from each other! Our governments will never tell us anything but the same lies told to us in the past! Just like Rosewell and ALL the others.
