"Or lots of CPU time on millions of standard workstations" .......... "Sure, but where are we going to get hold of millions of computers...?". This is what the Internet should be all about. Pooling resources, sharing knowledge. I'd like to help find intelligent life out there too. It would be exciting and reassuring at the same time!

Much more valid use of spare CPU than other Internet based distributed computing projects I've seen so far. Breaking cryptographic systems via this approach is ultimately pointless; it neither proves insecurity in the method, nor does it prove that current key sizes are insufficient for general use. This is a nice, indeterminate project which, whether or not it succeeds, makes me feel happy to contribute the CPU time.
