Q: Why Are People Running SETI@Home And Searching For Extraterrestrials ?A: Here Are Thousands Of Answers...Part 4 of 7 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
I love astronomy and any way to be involved with it, i'll do. I love astronomy and have always been fascinated with "what´s out there". I love astronomy stuff.
I love astronomy. I believe in the S.E.T.I effort. I wish I could be looking at the stars, instead of programming computers. I believe strongly in the S.E.T.I. effort. I love astronomy; always have. Just want to do my part to contribute. I love distributed computing. And to keep my computer busy. I love distributed processing and this must be the biggest example yet. I love space and I thought it might be fun to look at the sound waves. I love the concept of the distributive computing, using all the unused CPU time instead of having to invest in expensive computers. I love the idea of a massive parallel computer, doing something good. I love the idea of aliens, and I'd like to help find them, if there are any. I love the idea of being able to participate in a scientifically valid study on a very interesting topic which proves the Internet is useful and important to humanity, not just the million or so participates. I love the idea of self-made cooperative science. I love the idea of using the internet without profit goals and for the love of sience. I love the priniciple of this project : using pcs over the internet and gaining the most powerful computer in the world !!!! Thats great. My compliment to the one who had this idea. I love the stars and most things that go with them. I love the trill of data crunching, and i may discover something new! I love this idea of massively parallel computing. I love this kind of stuff and I want to find life on other planets. I love those crazy graphs! I love to learn about ETs & hope to help make a discovery. I majored in electrical engineering. The science appeals to me. I mostly use my computer for blowing up space aliens in games, now it can help find new ones in it's downtime! I must know if life is out there... I need a screensaver. I need to get home and I lost my phone. I need to get in contact with my home world :) I need to know too. I need to know. I needed a good screen saver. I needed a nice screensaver :) I needed a screen saver :) And even if I doubt to find ET, may be I can find something else interesting. I never thought I could be a part of the serach I once saw a UFO +-1956 looked like asilver football ,seen directly overhead. I personally want the answer to the ET question and I want to help in a project that I believe in. I prefer to watch for ET than play games! I realize that aliens could be good or bad, but I want to know if we are not alone. I really don't care if we do find an ET, but I find the research interesting. I really don't know...just looked interesting, I guess. And to get my name on a top 100 list :) I really like the science. I really need my 15 minutes of fame right now. I really support your cause, unfortunately I cannot provide monetary support, so I like helping any way possible. I refuse to believe that Mohter Earth is the only place in this Universe where something exists that Man defines as Life. I refuse to believe that we're the only beings in existence. I respect SETI and just want to see SETI succeed. I run SETI@home simply to help this project succeed. Its a good feeling being a small part of such an important task :o) I run SETI@home to proof that there are no aliens. I see the value of the work done by SETI and I am willing to do my part, I also understand the funding issue that was surely the genesis for this very program,though the benefits of the @home project (I beleive) were more than expected. I should have been an astronaut. I would go up in the shuttle if I could, but I guess this is the next best thing without leaving the ground. It would be nice to know if there is life out there, but our discovering that will come no sooner or later by any one person running the most productive screen saver ever. Religion has nothing to do with it, personal beliefs don't matter. If they are out there, (guess what, so are we), they're there. If they find us first it is no advantage to them. And besides, it just seemed like a fun thing to do WITHOUT any harm to others and at no cost. Hurray for the class of '79! I simply enjoy the participation,and it's educational. I strongly believe in this project, and am happy to contribute in whatever way I can. I support the science using spare CPU time for a good cause. I would participate in other activities like this. I sure hope we're really searching for SETI and not blindly processing IRS forms! Then again, if Uncle Sam put a computer in every home, we could reduce the IRS computer budget while advancing the Internet. I suspect the concept would be entertaining to college girls. I think I have lost my way, I would like to go back home! I think SETI is a worthwhile endevor. I think SETI is an important project, you need as much help as you can get, and I want to make my own small contribution to its success. I think SETI is too cool & am happy to be a part of it. I think SETI@Home is an interesting application for distributed processing, and I like the SETI project. I think SETI@home is an elegant solution and use of resources. I think a universe so vast this can not be the only planet that can sustain life that is very arrogant on our part I think distributed computing is a fantastic idea. I think finding ET will prove out what we believe to be religion is only an inner conscious thought of keeping our selves in check. I think finding ET would be the most profound thing to happen to man since he became aware of himself and his humanity. I think humanity needs help I think it is a Great Idea and have a quicker turn around time. I think it is a cool idea. I think it is a god projekt and i like to be a part of a grupe ho make somthing god for the man cind I think it is a good cause! I think it is a good cause,and i believe in it I think it is a great I think it is a great way to use resources. I think it is a worth while effort which the government should not fund I think it is an ingenius use of resources. I think it is cool and I wanted to be a part of it. I think it is important to find out and to prove that we are not the only ones in the universe. If we are to contact life out in the universe, other than the human race , then we could possibly solve some problems in our life on Earth, and to answer the many questions we have. I think it is interesting....besides, my sister is doing it!! I think it is just plain cool I think it is the ultimate in distributed processing and a fascinating way of using otherwise idle capicity essentially for free I think it is worth doing I think it will become the example for all future projects for homecomputers via the Internet! I think it would be a hoot to find out if there really is anyone out there I think it would be a wondrous thing to discover life ( of any kind ) outside of Earth. I find it hard to believe that THE MASTER in His infinite wisdom and power created a nearly limitless universe only to allow life on a small and insignificant speck of dust. I believe it is the desire of most humans to know that there is something other than ourselves "out there". To know that we are NOT ALONE! I hope we "discover" another civilization in my life-time! I think it would be cool to discover ET within my lifetime I think it would be extremely exciting to know there's other worlds and the lessions they could teach us I think it would be good to do. I only wish I could prosecc more work units. I think it's a great idea to share the work I think it's a great thing, to look for extra-terristrial intelligence, and try to prove that we aren't alone in the universe I think it's a worth while effort... I think it's a worthwhile endeavor, and I'm perfectly willing to give up idle time on my computer to assist in the quest. However, I will be amazed if the SETI project detects an alien civilization. I am middle-aged, and all my life I've believed that "the universe/galaxy is teeming with intelligent life." I no longer believe this. When the telescope was first invented, countless new stars and galaxies were found. When the microscope was first invented, countless new forms of life were discovered. When radio astronomy was first invented - NO new life forms have been detected. If the galaxy has myriads of intelligent, TECHNOLOGICAL civilizations, we would have found at least a few of them by now. I think Drake's equation doesn't take into account the likelihood of finding an intelligent, technological species that is within 100 years of us technologically. I'm sure a century from now we will have found some other way to communicate other than radio waves. Neutrinos? Through other dimensions? Who knows. The galaxy is probably full of life, but I suspect that most has never progressed beyond the single cell stage (it took a couple of billion years on Earth), and the rest are planets with non-sentient beings, with a few that have intelligent, but non-technological, beings. Whales and dolphins are intelligent, apparently, but they will never build a radio transmitter. There are probably a few civilizations comparable to us in the galaxy, but the odds of finding them are dauntingly small. Nevertheless, I wish you well, and I'll do my small part to help you find them. I think it's an awesome achievement thus far, and support exploring our universe in every way! I think it's an interesting cause I think it's exciting to be part of such an interesting experiment in distributed computing I think it's fascinating and very important! I think it's fun I think it's fun to be part of such a project of split computing ressources I think it's fun to tell people that my computer is connected to the Arecibo Radio Observatory and that parts of the sounds found in space are being analyzed on my computer. Also I like the idea that a lot of "Internet People" are working together to do this kind of work. I think it's great to part of such a massive computing project. Also I would like to try and help find ET sooner. I think it's important for 'big' science to see the number of people interested. I think it's important research I think it's interesting I think it's really neat to be involved in the effort. I think its a good idea - very neat!! I think its a neat idea, and I don't mind donating time I think its a worthy project...to help me get home... I think its better WE know of other life forms before OTHER life forms know about us. I think its good science... particularly the parallel computing aspects. (100x the worlds fastest standalone super computer?) I think its very interesting I think it´s interesting to search for ETI. Not only because Planet earth is the "loudest" Planet in our Solar System (Think of all the Radio & TV Stations which are sending Signals to satelites. Only 2% meet the Satelites directly. All the rest goes far out into Space and MUST be hearable for ET´s (Hoping that they´ve invetigated Radio-Waves already ;-) )) I think of the first astronauts, scared yet exhilirated by the unknown out side earth. This is probably the closest I'll be able to experience of that feeling. I think of this as Scientiific research I think professional reserch in this field is essential for humanity ! I think that is a good idea. I think that is a very interesting idea to have so many people using so many computers in the same capacity. Plus it kind of makes you feel like your part of something that matters in the long run. I think that it is a worthwhile project I think that it is very interesting, and would be an important discovery I think that it's a worthwhile project. It's a way that a person can be involved with something bigger than daily life. I think that the screen saver looks neat. I think that there has to be intelligent life out there. There's just too many planets to not have intelligent life on more than one. I think that humanity and science deserve help. And I wouldn't mind being known as the guy who discovered ET, either. :^) I think that this is an interesting experiment! I think that we need to see what the data shows. I think the US government has a huge coverup and they know that aliens exist. Thet've been acting strangely so I believe aliens exist and want to find them BADLY. I don't think the're hostile because if they have the intelligence to ome here they must be socialy advanced too. I think the idea of extraterrestrial intelligence is fascinating I think the money could be spent on other things if I help out with this. I think the multi-computer computer solution concept is neat. I think the possibility is likely that ETI will prove hostile--and therefore we must find them before they find us. I think the possibility of life outside Earth is good, and I like being part of an effort to locate it. I think the project is interesting, both from a computer point of view but also from a SETI point of view I think the world would come together if we could stand united in awe of the new day that would be born by finding other life I think they are out there and it would be interesting to find them I think this can find other astronomical phenomena that haven't been detected yet because of lack of computing power; I'd also enjoy being famous for finding an extraterrestrial signal. I think this form of clustering through the web is internets future : thats why I collaborate... I think this is a great project and it's worth the try I think this is a valid research project and I am happy to donate computer time for it. I think this is a very good idea. More could be accomplished if more people would just do it. I think this is a worth-while cause. Wish us good luck! I think this is good basic science I think this is the most creative use of the internet to finesse budgetary problems. Though I personally don't believe that there is ET, I think the idea of SETI@home is fabulous. I think this may be a good pilot program. Perhaps hospitals in 3rd world countries could make use of home computers during downtime to help process information. I think this project is very interesting I think we are already being visited by ET's. But I think this might be the best way to break the veil of secrecy. I think what SETI does is good for all in the long run and I would like to do my bit to help out. I though it was a good thing to do... helping in a job that would be very difficult without the help of as many people as we can get. I thought it was an interesting concept, wanted to be part of it. I thought it was an interesting project - guess I have read too much science fiction! I thought that the whole idea was a piece of coding brilliance. I tought it was a rather interesting project I truely believe that the SETI is a good and worthwhile project. I truly believe ET does exist and this is my way of trying to help prove it. I truly believe in peaceful aliens and want to help find them. I use it as a screensaver meanwhile my Pc works for something that could be very useful I used to work at the OSU Radio Observatory (The Big Ear) and want to continue doing my part for SETI. I view it as valid scientific research which obviously needs greater computer power than it can suply itself. I wanna go home I wanna go home ! I wanna help the SETI, but I really want to KNOW I wanna still be alive when it happens. I wanna try some alien beer ! I want ET to be found in my lifetime, to make reality fit my view of the universe I want a pet alien. I want a say in the signal to be sent back I want contribute projects I want help you I want meet Spock *laugh* I want proof to satisfy my own believes. I like to add though, that I think that ET is not nescesarely inyeligent. I think that the chance of non-inteligent life is much bigger. I want send bytes to the BINARYHEAVEN ( AMAP ) I want that this will change the humanity completely, that all know, that we're not alone in this big universe. All should think so... I want the Truth I want to I want to KNOW. Not just assume... or hope... I want to assist in the search, and it doesnt matter who 'finds' ET, just that it discovered sooner. I want to be a part of something. I want to be a part of the search. I want to be in this wonderful world project I want to be part of something that has the potential to change forever the way we think and act. For my daughter. I want to be part of somwthing that has the potential to forever alter the way we hink and do things. I want to be part of the future, and besides,the seti@home project is logical and surely possible. I want to be sure that ET exist. I want to be the first to coquer them before they destroy us and turn them into love slaves I want to be wrong I want to become a real life Trekkie, so I need a working warp drive design ... I want to believe :) I want to believe! I want to believe. I want to believe. 'nuff said. Regarding #2 - yes, but not yet. I'm not sure we'd be ready yet if/when we get a call back. I want to believe... I want to communicate with other species. I want to contribute and help out. I want to contribute something to finding out if there is life on other planets I want to contribute something to space exploration I want to contribute to a project who fascinate me for years I want to contribute to something I believe in. I want to contribute to the finding of ET. This so to prove that we are not alone. I want to contribute, in some small way, to finding evidence of the existance of ET...and on the small chance I might get famous by doing it. :) I want to cruse the galaxy I want to determine that if a signal is received would the beings who sent it still be alive considering the fact that when we observe stars we are looking into the distant past! I want to do something usefull for all humanity. I want to donate effort to the Planetary society and be a part of the largest single use of computing power on the planet I want to feel I am doing something special. I want to feel like I helped to find an answer whatever the answer! I want to find aliens and hunt them. I want to find my long-lost, evil-twin, anti-matter half-brother I want to find my relatives I want to find other life forms I want to find out if there is anything out there. I want to get beamed up! :-) I want to go HOME! I want to go home. I want to go to space and travel to alien worlds. I want to go with them I want to have proof that there is life other than our own I want to hear from Elvis I want to help and to know. I want to help discover ET, but can only hope it's for the good of humanity! I want to help do my part in the search. I want to help in anyway possible to find out if there is life outside the earth, but I'm not sure that they communicate in this way. I want to help in whatever way I can to find life outside our solar system. I want to help make believers out of the religious organizations/politicians that push 'TOO' hard to disprove (by the way of childish remarks and teachings) something they don't want to or are afraid to understand. I want to help make the existence of ET a *fact* of human culture and see what happens after that. I want to help on finding out wether there are aliens or not. I want to help out. I want to help prove that life outside Earth Does Exist I want to help science and I hope we find it out I want to help scientists in their research and make sure that there is life I want to help the search; I like being involved in this project I want to help you... It is a great project... I want to impress my girlfriend I want to kill ET I want to know I want to know . I want to know for sure I want to know if ET exists. I want to know if ET is out there I want to know if ET is really out there. And since the internet is the ideal place to divide and conquer I want to make a small contribution by letting my computers do some work for you (even if it is a very tiny fraction of the total workload). I want to know if I am already found I want to know if intelligent ET life exists I want to know if there IS anyone there, that's all I want to know if there are other life forms out there I want to know if there are other lifeforms in the universe, because I find the subject fascinating. I want to know if there is 'inteligent' life out there I want to know if there is life out there and I will help find this answer, if I am given the means of doing so. Seti@home lets me contribute to the search for the truth I want to know if there is life out there. I want to know if there is other life out there. I want to know if there really is life other than this insignificant little planet. I want to know if there's life out there!!! I want to know if they exist I want to know if they exist or not. I want to know if we are truly alone in the universe I want to know so I help to do what I can. I want to know the trues. I want to know the truth. I want to know we are not alone!!!! I want to know what is out there I want to know what's out there I want to know what's out there. I want to know what's really out there & its time we pulled our head out of our arses to search the universe for life! I want to know who might be out there. I want to know who they are. I want to know! I want to know. I want to know. I don't believe we can be an exception. I want to know. I want to learn what other life knows. I want to learn the TRUTH!!!!!! I want to make contact in this lifetime. I have lots of questions. I want to meet (see) an alien as soon as possible I want to meet ET I want to name an entire alien race, "Bob". I want to participate in important research about radio waves and ET . Perhaps radio waves are the way to find ET and perhaps not. What if we are the most advanced ET's in the universe? Isn't that scary? I want to proove my existence because I'm an ET I want to prove (even to myself sometimes) that what i believed all my my life that we are not alone is true and i also want a hint (hopefully) of how they look lile , where they are , and what is the level of their civilisation. I want to prove there is life out there I want to prove to those who don't believe, that other beings in the universe do exist. I personally know they do. I want to really know IF there is intelligent LIFE out there I want to see an intelligent creature that's not human. I want to see humanity finally take the leap into space exploration. I want to see if there are any aliens up there... I want to see proof that we are not alone I want to spend my processing power for the science I want to support a truly great scientific endevour. I want to support a very clever and worthwhile project I want to support the idea of home computers helping science during idle time. I think it allows the scientists to get on with the business of real science instead of waiting for numbers to crunch. It boggles my mind to think about how much faster our kno I want to touch the stars I want to travel in space while I'm alive ;-) I want to work for SETI in the future I want us to find something I wanted a free screen-saver, and SETI is cool I wanted to benchmark my PC and then got hooked on the numbers... I wanted to do this as a kid. Now I can help. I wanted to get involved with SETI I wanted to join in the search for another intelligent civilisation beyond our own planet, because it would be my dream if in my lifetime ET would be found, it would unite humanity in a way that would stop wars and hopefully create peace for the whole of mankind. I wanted to keep it on over the winter and seti was a more sensible thing to do than to crack codes. I wanted to know what the galaxy "sounds" like, and how they processed radio signals. All in all, just curious!!!! I wanted to support this project because I believe in it. I was always facinated by use of computers for processing extremely large amounts of information I was enthralled and inspired by Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon; this is our moon walk. Together we can accomplish the improbable.h I was inspired by the book "Contact". I will participate in any @home project. I wish to contribute to ongoing scientific research benefiting the ultimate quest for knowledge and understanding of the universe. I would just like to find a signal and know once and for all that we are not alone. I would just like to know. I would like an answer to this question in my lifetime. I would like proof that there are Little green men out there! I would like to be involved in finding proof of life beyond Earth. I would like to be the one to find an ET, I know they exist! I would like to believe that we are not alone and I would also like proof I would like to find ET because i do believe in them and i do think there are more than even one living universe or planet over there that do have living things... I would like to find ET simply to know the answer to the first question, "is there life outside of Earth?" I would like to find the answer in my lifetime I would like to know before I die I would like to know if there is something out there I would like to know what is out there. It would be a total waste of space if there were nothing I would like to know/help find if E.T. really is there, and also participate in biggest ET search and computing project of all time :-) I would like to see if an ET civilization would treat us as badly as we treat non-human animals I would like to see someone find that needle in a haystack. I would love to confirm that there is extraterrestrial sentitent life I would love to see what another civilization, completely detached from ours, would be like. They might have interesting technology to share with us and vise versa (I don't know if that's spelled right). They may have an absolutely beautiful planet. I would prefer to keep myh reasons to myself I would support any positive research about space I'M AN AMATEUR ASTRONOMER AND, TO SAY IT WITH DANTE, "SHIPMATES ... DO NOT DENY TO THE BRIEF REMAINING WATCH OUR SENSES STAND EXPERIENCE OF THE WORLD BEYOND THE SUN" I'VE SEEN UFOs AND I KNOW THEY EXCIST WE SHOULD COMUNICATE I'am like this metod for find information. I'd be astonished if the search were ever successful however it's a worthwhile use of my spare mips. I'd get a kick out of finding an ET I'd like to be a part of this fascinating and important project, if only in a small way I'd like to be alive when life is heard I'd like to contribute to any academic research efforts. I'd like to have a stake in this marvelous research! I'd like to help even if its only a small part I'd like to know I'd like to share a sparkling beverage with them and have a nice chat! I'll never reach top 100 so just for fun I suppose; However it's an excellent (=easy to install and to run) test load/debugging tool for machines - I'm serious. I'm REALLY nosey I'm a Carl Sagan fan. I'm a died in the wool Star Trek fan I'm a fan of Art Bell and He recommended it; want to be on his team I'm a geek who likes stuff like this I'm a geek, it's fun and, well, it's a cool idea!!!! I'm a phisics student, wanna be a radioastronomer I'm a proud member of a long-lasting race race called Humans, I would like to meet proud members of other races, and exchange Technology, scince, liturature, art, and biological information concerning our two races, if they read this: You are welcome to earth at any time, just don't land on the White House's lawn, they'll probably shoot you down, anywhere else is fine, Madison Square Garden is a good place to consider, and welcome again. I'm a sci-fi freak I'm a sci-fi freak and I think that nothing would be cooler than knowing there are other life forms out there I'm a scientist, and I think we should encourage research of this type I'm a team player. :) I'm a university professor, I believe that we need to develop at the maximum possible extent our knowledge I'm an Obsessive Compulsive. ;-) I'm an advocate of pure research and I like to see the fundamentalists squirm. I'm an alien and I must study you people.. =) I'm an amateur astronomer, and this is one of the ways I can contribute to astronomical research. I'm fascinated by the possibility of there being extraterrestrial life. I'm fascinated by the science. I'm glad to be able to use my computer to help with research I'm happy to join a great project. I'm having fun doing this!_^ I'm helping scientist I'm impressed by the distributed processing solution - whoever was clever enough to dream up this idea deserves a medal!! I'm interested in distributed computing and think this is an intriguing project I'm interested in finding exobiotic life I'm interested in the SETI projects I'm interested in the project and I thought I'd help out. I'm interested in utterly strange civilisations I'm interested in what this experiment can prove as far as distrbuted computing as concerned as well as interested in helping the search for ET. I'm interested wheather there is ET life or not and for comparison with other computer systems. I'm not sure we wouldn't regret finding ET later. But if there is somebody out there, I sure as hell want to know about it. I'm part of the largest number-crunching project on Earth! I'm shure that Et are real and i want dimostrate it I'm so lonely I'm still not sure if the SETI project is a cover of a classified research "said" to find ET but what the hell... I'm very supportive of the cause, but very dissapointed in the SETI@Home people's execusion of it... But I have a lot of power going to waste - may as well just let the thing run I'm watching to much X-files series! I'm watching too much X-files series! I'ts only Rock and Roll, but i like it I've always been drawn toward things of this nature. If Et really is out there I want to be on the team that make first contact I've always been fascinated by the SETI programme I've always been intrigued by the prooject I've always beleived in the SETI project. I've always believed there was other sentient life in the universe. I wanted to be able to help find it, not just for the "good" of humanity, but because we need to know we are not alone. I've always belived in ET. I think it would be really cool to be the one to find ET, for any reason. I've always felt that with a universe so vast, that there is probably a good liklyhood, that there are possibly other types of beings we don't yet know of. If ever SETI or any other agency make's contact, I'd like to know for myself that I did at least a small part to accomplish the end goal's. I've always wanted to be a part of the scientific community and think this a great way to participate since I'm now in the business world. I've been a longtime fan of SETI. I've been excited by the possibilities of distributed computing. SETI@Home was just too convenient to pass up. I've been wanting to work for SETI since I was 13 years old, and now I have the chance, without having to move to Arecibo... I've got CPU time to donate - if ET is there, why not become famous... I've got lakefront property in FLA to sell, what better customer than "ET"! I've got nothing to loose and I'm making a contribution for the S.E.T.I. project. And I hope to know if there are life in other part of the Universe. IF they are hostile and they arive... I at least tried to look for them... It's fun to participate in a scientific quest It's fun to participate in such a worldwide project It's fun to think about. More mind candy. :) It's fun! It's fun, my students think it is wonderful to be part of a global search. And I believe in what you are doing. It's fun. It's fun; it helps break up the monotony of same old problem(s), different day (obviously, I am running it at work!) It's a positive thing the internet has allowed us (geeks and IT community) to do together, besides become antisocial couch potatoes, as so many net-heads do. And, it's a fun race with each other to see who turns the most results per day and how fast we (team) can climb up the results ladder! It's good not to be alone... It's good science -- Besides, I like the idea of participating in the world's largest supercomputer. It's good science and good science should be supported whenever possible It's good science that I'm interested in! It's good science! If it's there.....find it! It's good science. It's good to be part of such a great collaborative work. It's good to help out with something I believe will contribute to the scientific world (eventually) It's good to use my computing power to something usefull rather than stay idle. It's great to be a member of a research project this big and with this subject It's great to be part of such an extraordinary project It's important. Although I know that we have already made contact. It's impressive when you tell people your neat-o screensaver is really hunting down aliens. It's interesting, besides, why promote more tax dollars wasted on supercomputers when we can do it inexpensively. WTG!! It's interesting, mind provoking and fun - plus keeps my computer productive It's interesting. It's interesting. I believe it's worth spending some time on. It's is giving me a reason to upgrade my CPU's, I also am quite positive about the results of distributed computing. I think We have the worlds largest computational machine to date? It's just Interesting It's just a fun thing to contribute to. It's just a great idea. The machines were on anyway, so I thought I'ld help out.
